We arrived at the Eiffel Tower at about 10ish this morning. We have past it countless times during our stay and again last night when we were on the bus, but we set aside this morning to actually go to the top. Book says it opens at 8. Like l said we got there at 10, that's early in Paris. It was roped off, the flashing sign said it opened at 9.30 but by this stage it was 10.15. Noticed that there was plastic tape closing off the whole base of the tower and a decent distance around it.
First thought, l have been waiting to go to the top of this structure since year 7, we have been here a week and decided we'd do this on our last day and the bloody thing is closed.
After our discussion had a better look around us and there were armed police and soldiers everywhere - It all seemed serious but a bit casual. There was a man standing near a case probably 40 metres from us. Next thing the officer who was obviously in charge, came over and greeted - and l mean shook the hand of each officer standing in front of us. He then looked at those of us in the crowd, shouted something in French and proceeded to block his ears. His colleagues understood him but we had no idea. Before we had a chance to do anything there was a loud explosion, they'd blown the black case up.
In a matter of seconds the bloke closest to the case grabbed it a walked towards us, on his jacket it said bomb squad. The plastic tape was removed and life went on as if nothing happened, we all just got in the queue paid for our tics and went to the top of the tower.
We noticed signs around after the event saying that any bags, cases etc that were left around would be blown up.
The view by the way was spectacular.
